Vita Vea Asks Out of Tampa Bay as Contract Standoff Boils Over
The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle requested a trade Monday after extension talks with the Buccaneers collapsed, per NFL Network.
Four days into training camp season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a problem in the middle of their defense: Vita Vea wants out.
The two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle requested a trade on Monday, according to NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, after talks on a contract extension broke down. Vea, 31, is entering the final year of the four-year, $71 million extension he signed in 2022 and is set to earn $18 million in 2026 — with nothing guaranteed beyond that.
A standoff months in the making
This didn't come out of nowhere. Vea skipped Tampa Bay's spring workouts over his contract situation, and while he was expected at camp, his participation status is now unclear, per NFL.com. The 6-foot-4, 347-pound anchor — the No. 12 overall pick in 2018 and a Super Bowl LV champion — put up 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits across all 17 games in 2025, per Yahoo Sports.
Why it matters
Interior defensive linemen who command double teams the way Vea does are hard to find and expensive to replace, which is exactly why the price of keeping one past age 30 is such a hard call for general manager Jason Licht. Tampa Bay has built its recent NFC South dominance on a defensive front that starts with Vea occupying blockers.
The Buccaneers have not publicly responded to the request. A trade request is not a trade — plenty of camp standoffs end with a restructured deal and a handshake. But contenders thin on interior pass rush will be circling, and every practice Vea misses raises the temperature. Watch whether he takes the field this week, and whether Tampa Bay blinks first.
