Toronto FC 2-1 Montréal: two goals in 116 seconds flip the 401 Derby
Substitutes Lewis Morgan and Djordje Mihailovic struck deep in stoppage time at BMO Field to turn a derby defeat into a win.
For 92 minutes on Saturday, CF Montréal were on course to take the latest edition of the Canadian Classique. Then Toronto FC scored twice in stoppage time — 116 seconds apart — and BMO Field erupted around a 2-1 win that came almost entirely off the bench.
How it unfolded
Toronto's night began badly: goalkeeper Luka Gavran went off injured in the 23rd minute, handing William Yarbrough a club debut. Montréal's pressure eventually told in the 52nd, when Yarbrough parried Matty Longstaff's effort and Daniel Ríos tapped in the rebound.
The game turned on Robin Fraser's substitutions. Djordje Mihailovic, making his first appearance since September 5 after injury, came on just after the hour; Lewis Morgan followed in the 82nd. In the third minute of stoppage time, Niklas Dorsch whipped in a first-time cross off a short Richie Laryea throw and Morgan volleyed home his first goal for the club. Barely two minutes later, Richie Laryea released Theo Corbeanu down the right, and his low cross was swept in by Mihailovic for the winner, per the club's recap.
What it means
Neither side is going anywhere this fall — Toronto sit on 32 points (7W-10L-11D) and Montréal on 24 (6W-16L-6D) — but derbies carry their own table. Toronto are now unbeaten in six straight regular-season meetings with Montréal dating to May 2024, and the sight of Mihailovic scoring in his first game back is the most encouraging thing to happen to this team in weeks. For Montréal, it is a brutal way to lose a match they led deep into added time.
Morgan became the ninth different scorer for Toronto in 2026, and Dorsch logged his first assist for the club. Toronto host Orlando City on Wednesday at BMO Field.
