Three Teams, Two Spots: The NL Wild-Card Race Is Now a Dead Heat

The Padres' 11-2 demolition of the Brewers pulled them level with the Phillies and Diamondbacks at 64-57, setting up a three-way scrap for the National League's last two playoff places.

The National League playoff picture just compressed into its tightest shape of the season. After San Diego's fourth straight win on Tuesday night, the Torch standings show the Phillies, Diamondbacks and Padres all sitting on identical 64-57 records — three teams for the final two wild-card spots, with 41 games left to sort it out.

How Tuesday changed it

The Padres didn't just win, they made a statement against the league's best team. Luis Rengifo hit a second-inning grand slam off Milwaukee's Kyle Harrison — against his former club, no less — as San Diego hammered the NL Central-leading Brewers 11-2, per NBC San Diego. Fernando Tatis Jr. added his 164th career home run, moving past Nate Colbert into sole possession of second place on the franchise list, and Walker Buehler (7-5) cruised through six innings of one-run ball. Harrison (9-3) absorbed eight runs on ten hits.

Elsewhere on Tuesday's slate, the Cardinals blanked the Phillies 2-0 and the Rockies nicked the Diamondbacks 3-2 — which is exactly how a three-way tie forms overnight.

The shape of the race

The Cubs (70-50) hold the top wild card comfortably, four games behind Milwaukee (74-46) in the Central. Behind the deadlocked trio, the Marlins (61-59) lurk within striking distance, so this isn't even a closed race yet.

What makes it compelling is that the three arrived at 64-57 from opposite directions on the same night: Philadelphia shut out in St. Louis, Arizona tripped up by last-place Colorado, San Diego surging on a four-game streak. If the season ended today, one of the trio would be home in October — which is why every head-to-head series between these clubs from here on carries playoff weight.

The Brewers, Braves (72-48) and Dodgers (72-48) can worry about seeding. For the trio at 64-57, the next seven weeks are the season.
