Two years out from Los Angeles, the LA28 qualification era officially begins. The 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships run August 13–16 in Düsseldorf, Germany, and according to NFL.com, the top two men's and top two women's teams — excluding the pre-qualified United States, who are in as Olympic hosts — will punch tickets to LA28, where six teams per gender will compete in the sport's Olympic debut.

Why it matters

This is the first hard currency of the LA28 cycle — Olympics.com bills it as the first quotas for LA28 on the line anywhere. While most sports are still years from handing out places, flag football is awarding actual Olympic berths this weekend. For a sport making its Games debut in 2028, the stakes arrived fast.

The format

Sixteen men's and sixteen women's national teams are split into four groups for round-robin play, with the top two in each group advancing to single-elimination quarter-finals. The field includes Mexico, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil and more, playing at a complex in Düsseldorf's Garath district that includes the New England Patriots' Flag Football Field.

Team USA: specialists, not stars

For all the talk of NFL players chasing Olympic flag football, the American rosters announced by USA Football are built on the sport's own veterans. Quarterback Darrell "Housh" Doucette III returns to lead the men under head coach Jorge Cascudo, while the women's side, coached by Saaid Mortazavi, features Isabella "Izzy" Geraci, described by USA Football as the sport's premier wide receiver.

The Americans can't win an Olympic spot here — they already have one — but everyone else can. For federations from Panama to Austria, four days in Düsseldorf could decide whether their sport's biggest moment happens with them in it.
