The Road to LA28 is officially open — and the qualifying math is real
Triathlon and shooting have now locked in how athletes reach Los Angeles. The rankings race for a spot has already started.
The countdown clock on the Torch homepage is one thing. The qualifying clock is another — and for a growing list of Olympic sports, it's already running.
Triathlon opened its LA28 qualification period on May 18, 2026, with the first scoring race at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Alghero on May 30. From here to May 2028, every start line matters.
How a triathlete actually makes it
Only 55 women and 55 men will race at Venice Beach, capped at three athletes per country per gender. Ranking points are earned across a two-year window, and an athlete's 12 best results count toward the final standings — with no more than eight of those coming from races shorter than the Olympic distance. That rule is a quiet signal: LA28 wants athletes proven over the full distance, not just fast over short ones.
The points ladder rewards the biggest stages. A World Triathlon Championship Finals win is worth 1,250 points, a Championship Series race 1,000, the LA28 test event 1,000, a World Cup 500, and a continental championship at Olympic distance 400. There are eight separate pathways in all, from mixed relay results to continental slots to new provisions meant to widen the field for underrepresented nations.
As the host, the United States automatically secures two women and two men for the mixed relay, pending eligibility.
Shooting locks in its map
Shooting became one of the latest sports to finalize its system, with the IOC Executive Board approving the plan on July 12, 2026. There are 340 quota places across 15 events, split evenly between 170 men and 170 women. Of those, 316 are earned through qualifying competitions between now and 2028, with 12 host-nation places reserved for the U.S. and 12 universality places to keep the field global.
Each national committee can send a maximum of 24 shooters — 12 men, 12 women — with up to two athletes per individual event. The pathways run through designated ISSF World Championships, continental championships, and other approved events.
Why this matters now
Two years out, the Games can feel abstract. Qualification systems are where they become concrete: real athletes, real races, a real ledger of points that decides who stands on the Venice Beach start line and the shooting range in the summer of 2028. The road is open. The math has started.
