The Los Angeles 2028 Olympics stopped being an abstraction this month: the first athlete quota places of the entire Games have now been awarded, and they went to flag football — the NFL-backed newcomer making its Olympic debut in LA.

What happened in Düsseldorf

The IFAF World Flag Football Championships ran 13-16 August in Düsseldorf, Germany, with 16 teams in each of the men's and women's tournaments, per NFL.com. The event doubled as the first LA28 qualifier in any sport: the top two finishers per gender — excluding the pre-qualified host United States — earn places in the six-team Olympic tournaments.

Canada's women delivered the headline result, going undefeated and beating the United States 27-20 in the final to take gold, according to Football Canada. The United States men were crowned world champions, per the IFAF's announcement, while Canada's men took bronze with a 34-26 overtime win over Mexico.

Who booked Los Angeles

Football Canada confirmed that both its women's and men's teams secured LA28 quota places — a double booking two years out from the Games. On the men's side, Italy also claimed a quota, per Olympics.com, whose report described the Italians going "to bed with a giant smile." With the hosts already in, the remaining spots in each six-team field will be filled through later stages of the qualification pathway.

For a sport that only joined the Olympic programme in 2023, handing out the Games' very first quotas is a statement of arrival — and a reminder that the road to Los Angeles is now officially open.
