The countdown is real: LA28 is now under two years away
Two summers from now, Los Angeles hosts the Games for a third time. Here’s the map of what happens between here and there.
Mark it: Opening Ceremony, Friday, July 14, 2028. Competition runs July 12–30 across Los Angeles and beyond, closing on the 30th. From today, that’s a little under two years out — close enough to start planning, far enough that almost everything is still up for grabs.
What fills the gap
The next two years are the qualification gauntlet. Most Olympic places aren’t won at the Games — they’re earned now, through world rankings, continental championships, and national trials that run right up to the summer of 2028. That’s the drama we’ll be tracking: who’s locking in, who’s fading, who comes out of nowhere.
Why LA28 already looks different
A few things make this edition stand out before a single event is contested:
- A record 351 medal events — the most in Olympic history — with a hard push toward gender balance.
- Five sports added for LA: flag football, cricket, lacrosse, squash, and the return of baseball and softball.
- A Games spread across existing venues — the Coliseum, the Inglewood stadium, the Long Beach waterfront — with a couple of events even heading out of state to Oklahoma City.
What’s next on Torch
We’ll roll qualification news into this feed as it happens, keep the schedule current as LA28 firms up session times, and start building out athlete pages the moment rosters take shape. The climb has started. We’ll be here for every step.
