Sovereignty Reclaims Saratoga: Derby Winner Rolls in the Whitney
A year after his Travers, Godolphin's champion came from near last to win the 99th Whitney Stakes by 4¾ lengths.
For a few furlongs on Saturday evening, it looked like the wrong script. Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, was nearly last as the field for the 99th Whitney Stakes turned up the backstretch at Saratoga. Then Junior Alvarado asked, the big colt swung five wide, and the race dissolved. Sovereignty ran down pacesetter Nitrogen inside the final furlong and drew off to win by 4¾ lengths in 1:47.91, with Antiquarian third, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.
Why it matters
This was the win that restored order in the older-dirt-horse division. Sovereignty had not visited the winner's circle since the 2025 Travers, over this same track - his 2026 form read second in the Oaklawn Handicap, third in the Stephen Foster. Saturday answered the question of whether the four-year-old version was merely good. Per TDN, his record now stands at seven wins from 12 starts and roughly $6.9 million earned for owner-breeder Godolphin.
Trust the horse
Trainer Bill Mott kept the instructions simple. "I told Junior, just ride him like you always did before. Don't change anything," he said afterward, per TDN - and the ride looked exactly like the ones that won the Derby in the slop and the Belmont at Saratoga: patience, then one sustained run.
What's next
The stated target is the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, per US Racing, a race that could set up a Breeders' Cup Classic collision with Forever Young, last year's Classic winner. On the numbers - full order of finish here - the division still runs through the bay with the white star, and it isn't particularly close.
