Runaways and a Half-Game Race: MLB's August Sorting Is Underway

The Brewers still own baseball's best record despite a gut-punch loss in San Diego, while the AL West lead sits at exactly half a game.

Seven weeks from the finish, baseball's races are splitting into two kinds: the settled and the razor-thin. The Torch standings tell the story at both extremes.

The front-runners

Milwaukee sits at 74-45, the most wins in baseball — even after Monday night stung. Jackson Merrill crushed a 431-foot, two-run homer off Logan Henderson in the seventh to lift the Padres 3-2, per Yahoo Sports, wasting a six-inning, seven-strikeout gem from the Brewers rookie and a Christian Yelich two-run shot. Milwaukee's NL Central lead over the surging Cubs is still five games.

The company at the top is familiar: Tampa Bay (72-46) stretched its AL East lead to six over the Yankees with a 10-6 win against the Athletics, while Atlanta (71-48) and the Dodgers (71-48) hold cushions of 7.5 games in the NL East and West.

The photo finishes

Then there's the AL West, where Houston (61-59) leads Texas (60-59) by half a game — the only division led by a team barely above .500. The Rangers kept the pressure on with a 4-1 win over the Angels on Monday. The AL Central is barely calmer: the White Sox (61-56) lead a pack with the Twins and Tigers both 3.5 back.

The National League's real drama has migrated to the wild card, where the Phillies and Diamondbacks are dead even at 64-56 and the Padres (63-57) sit half a game behind them. In the AL, Fox Sports notes Boston's remarkable climb from 14 games under .500 to double digits over; the Red Sox (64-54) hold the second AL wild card despite Monday's 2-1 loss in Toronto.

Worth watching

Two individual chases are adding juice to August, per Fox Sports: Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski became the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to 200 strikeouts in a season, and Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong is closing in on a 30-homer, 30-steal year. The full slate continues tonight — every matchup is on the Torch schedule.
