Rodri to Barcelona: City Agree to Let Their Anchor Go
Manchester City have accepted a bid worth a reported £65m for the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner, with only a medical standing between Rodri and a four-year deal in Catalonia.
The most consequential transfer of the summer window arrived with two weeks to spare. Manchester City have agreed a fee with Barcelona for Rodri, the midfielder who has defined their engine room for seven seasons, according to reports from Sky Sports, David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano. Al Jazeera reports the fee at £65.4m ($88.5m), with the 30-year-old agreeing a four-year contract; some outlets have cited a figure closer to €60m. Neither club has formally announced the deal, and Yahoo Sports reports the move is pending completion of a medical, with Rodri quoted as calling it "a dream come true."
What City are losing
The raw numbers understate it. Across 298 appearances since arriving from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri collected 12 major honours — four Premier League titles, the 2023 Champions League (where he scored the winner in the final), two FA Cups and three League Cups — and became the first City player to win the Ballon d'Or, in 2024. He captained Spain to the World Cup title in July, per NBC Sports. With one year left on his contract, City faced a familiar arithmetic: sell now for a premium, or risk losing him for nothing next summer.
The fine print
There are caveats on both sides. Al Jazeera notes Rodri recently underwent minor back surgery and sat out Sunday's 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal — context for why the medical is more than a formality. For Barcelona, the deal lands alongside the permanent signing of João Cancelo, another former City man, on a three-year contract, per Yahoo Sports.
What it means
For City, the question that has shadowed them since Rodri's 2024 ACL injury — what does this team look like without him — is no longer hypothetical. For Barcelona, pairing the game's best holding midfielder with their young core is a statement of intent for a season that ends with them defending La Liga and chasing Europe. The window closes August 31; expect an official announcement well before then.
