The NBA showed its hand Tuesday, unveiling its opening night and Christmas Day slates — and both revolve around Madison Square Garden.

October 20: banner night, with company

The season tips off Tuesday, October 20 with a tripleheader on NBC and Peacock, per the league's key dates: Celtics at Pistons (3 p.m. ET), 76ers at Knicks (7 p.m. ET) and Thunder at Spurs (9:30 p.m. ET).

The middle game is the main event. The Knicks will raise their first championship banner in 53 years and hand out rings to Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and company — with LeBron James in the building as the opposition. James joined Philadelphia this offseason, linking up with Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown on a roster built specifically to challenge the champs, according to the AP. The nightcap is no throwaway either: a rematch of last spring's seven-game Western Conference finals between Victor Wembanyama's Spurs and two-time reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Thunder.

Christmas: the Finals, again

The five-game December 25 slate, all on ABC and ESPN, opens with Spurs at Knicks at noon — a Finals rematch at the Garden, and New York's 59th Christmas game, per NBA.com. Then come Heat at Celtics, 76ers at Lakers — James returning to Los Angeles for a record 21st Christmas appearance — Thunder at Timberwolves, and Nuggets at Warriors, pairing Nikola Jokić and Stephen Curry in the late window.

What's next

This was only a first look. The complete 2026-27 schedule arrives Thursday, August 13, per the AP report — with an Emirates NBA Cup final set for Indianapolis on December 11, regular-season games in Paris and Manchester in January, and All-Star Weekend in Phoenix in February.
