Red Sox Rout the A's 13-1 as the AL Wild-Card Line Sits at .500
Boston's winning streak rolled on Friday night while five teams sit within two and a half games of the American League's final playoff spot.
The American League playoff race is turning into a scrum, and Boston is the one team sprinting away from it. The Red Sox hammered the Athletics 13-1 on Friday night at Fenway, per Torch's live results, extending a surge that MLB.com's playoff picture already had at eight straight wins — a run that has carried Boston from 14 games under .500 to 64-51 in about six weeks.
The table right now
Per Torch's live standings, the Yankees (65-51) and Red Sox hold the top two AL wild-card spots with room to spare. The fight is for the third one, and it is remarkably congested: the Rangers (58-58) currently hold it at exactly .500, with the Twins and Guardians (both 58-59) half a game back, the Tigers and Orioles (both 56-60) two back, and the Mariners (56-61) two and a half out. Five teams within two and a half games — and none of them playing like they want it.
Friday's margins were tiny
The contenders mostly traded punches. Texas edged Baltimore 2-1, Cleveland went into Chicago and beat the AL Central-leading White Sox 8-2 to stay in the hunt, and the Yankees held off the Braves 3-2 in the Bronx — a result that also ended Atlanta's own eight-game winning streak, per MLB.com's account of that run.
Why it matters
With the Rays (69-46) running away with the AL East and the White Sox leading the Central at just 59-56, the league's postseason cut line is effectively a coin-flip record. That makes August baseball unusually valuable: one hot fortnight — Boston is the proof — can rewrite a whole season. The next series loss by Texas, Minnesota or Cleveland could shuffle the entire bottom of the bracket.
