Real Madrid beat Sevilla 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, 18 October, in La Liga's ninth round, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice.

The goals

According to Tapmad's match report, Arda Güler opened the scoring in the 30th minute and Mbappé made it 2-0 in the 37th, so Madrid went in at half-time with a two-goal lead. Mbappé then scored from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute; Outlook India describes the penalty as chipped. Sevilla pulled one back through Manu Bueno in the 80th minute, but Yan Diomande restored the three-goal margin two minutes later.

Outlook India reports that Mbappé's brace took him to 11 goals in 11 games across all competitions, and that Vinícius Júnior missed the match through suspension.

The numbers

Tapmad lists Madrid with 65 per cent of possession and 15 shots, nine on target, against Sevilla's 11 shots, five on target, and says neither side had a player sent off. These figures come from a single outlet and should be treated as indicative.

What it means

Outlook India says the win leaves Madrid six points behind leaders Barcelona, and that the two clubs meet in El Clásico on 25 October. Tapmad's table puts Barcelona on 27 points and Atlético Madrid second on 22, with Madrid third and Sevilla sixth; the same page is inconsistent about Madrid's own total (its text says 24 points, its table 21), so Torch has not stated Madrid's tally.

Taken together, the result keeps Madrid in the title chase going into the Clásico, while Sevilla leave Madrid with the consolation of the late goal but not the points. Real Madrid's own match page confirms the 4-1 final score.
