Penguins Hang Seven on the Flyers in a Season-Opening Statement

Pittsburgh routed Philadelphia 7-0 on opening night — the worst season-opening loss in Flyers history and instant payback for last spring's playoff exit.

The handshake line from last spring clearly still stung. Five months after Philadelphia knocked Pittsburgh out of the first round in six games, the Penguins walked into the Flyers' home opener on September 30 and delivered a 7-0 demolition — a result NBC Sports Philadelphia called the worst season-opening loss in Flyers history.

Depth did the damage

This wasn't a one-line show. Nick Robertson scored twice in his Pittsburgh debut, including a short-handed goal in the third, while Filip Hallander piled up a goal and two assists and Hendrix Lapierre added a goal and a helper. Evgeni Malkin, Ville Koivunen and Egor Chinakhov — the last on the power play — rounded out the scoring. According to Sportsnet Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh built a 2-0 first-period lead, buried three more in the second, and 14 Penguins finished with at least a point. Malkin's goal was reported as his 100th career point against Philadelphia.

A long night in the Philadelphia net

Arturs Silovs needed only 19 saves for the shutout — his third in the NHL — as Pittsburgh outshot the Flyers 38-19. At the other end, Dan Vladar stopped 31 of 38 in his first game as a Flyer, abandoned repeatedly by a team that managed no sustained pushback. Offseason addition Noel Acciari finished minus-3 in his Philadelphia debut.

What it means

For Pittsburgh, it's exactly the opening argument a team built around veteran stars and hungry newcomers wanted to make: the new faces — Robertson, Hallander, Koivunen — produced immediately. For Philadelphia, one night doesn't erase a playoff season, but getting blanked at home by your fiercest rival raises immediate questions about the defensive structure and the netminding split. The Flyers got a quick chance to respond the next night in New Jersey, while the Penguins returned home to host Montreal on October 3.
