Padres 4, Brewers 3 in 11: Campusano Caps a Sweep of MLB's Best

A two-out single in the 11th finished off baseball's top team and completed a three-game San Diego sweep — the Padres' fifth straight win.

The best record in baseball came to San Diego and left with nothing. The Padres outlasted the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 11 innings on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep of the MLB-leading Brewers, per WTMJ.

The finish

Milwaukee actually took the lead in the top of the 11th, but San Diego answered twice. Jackson Merrill tied it at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly, and then, with two outs, Luis Campusano lined a single to right that brought home the winning run and emptied the home dugout.

That the game got that deep was largely down to Milwaukee's Dustin May, who was excellent for seven innings — one run allowed with six strikeouts — before the bullpens took over and the margins shrank to nothing.

A statement series

The result extends a remarkable San Diego surge: five straight wins and a 15-4 run over the last 19 games, form that has carried the Padres into the National League's second wild-card position. Sweeping a Brewers club that arrived with baseball's best record is the kind of series that recalibrates how seriously the rest of the league takes them.

For Milwaukee, the sting is real but the cushion is too — the Brewers left town still holding the NL's best record and a comfortable Central lead. The larger concern is the shape of the losses: three straight one-possession games in which the bullpen couldn't close the door.

What it means

San Diego's climb tightens an already crowded NL race — the teams below them are now fighting for one fewer realistic spot. And for a Padres roster that spent the first half hovering, a sweep of the league's front-runner is the clearest sign yet that the late-season version of this team is a different proposition.
