Mammoth 2, Avalanche 0: Vejmelka's Shutout Caps a Tidy Preseason Statement
Utah closed its exhibition schedule at Delta Center with early goals from Jack McBain and Logan Cooley, a perfect penalty kill, and a 25-save shutout.
Preseason finales are auditions, and Utah passed theirs. The Mammoth blanked the Colorado Avalanche 2-0 at Delta Center on Saturday, doing all their scoring inside the first eleven minutes and letting Karel Vejmelka take care of the rest, per the Mammoth's game story.
How it unfolded
Jack McBain opened the scoring at 6:30 of the first period, and Logan Cooley doubled the lead about four minutes later with a power-play goal — a greasy finish at the net front, and Utah's third straight preseason game with a power-play strike, according to The Hockey Writers. From there the game belonged to the goaltender and the penalty killers.
Vejmelka stopped all 25 shots he faced, with Cooley calling him "such an incredible goalie" and McBain labeling it "a great performance." The penalty kill went a perfect four-for-four, including one stretch where Utah erased two overlapping penalties — the closest Colorado came to breaking through.
The caveats
Head coach André Tourigny wasn't handing out grades. He flagged loose-puck battles and power-play zone entries as work items — Utah finished 1-for-9 with the man advantage — and said the special teams "still [have] some work to do." The lineup, though, closely resembled the group expected on opening night, which makes the clean defensive performance more meaningful than a typical September result. Colorado, playing its preseason finale, was held without a goal despite four power-play chances.
What it means
Utah opens the regular season Thursday, October 1, hosting Chicago at Delta Center. A shutout built on goaltending and penalty killing is exactly the foundation a young team wants to carry into a season where the Central Division offers no soft nights — and Vejmelka just made the crease conversation very simple.
