Maitland-Niles at the death: Everton 2-2 Manchester United
A 25-yard stoppage-time curler from debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles — the latest goal Hill Dickinson Stadium has ever seen — denied Michael Carrick's United a first away win of the season.
Manchester United were seconds from a win that would have steadied their start. Instead, Ainsley Maitland-Niles bent an extraordinary 25-yard equaliser into the top corner deep in stoppage time, and Everton 2-2 Manchester United became the story of the Premier League weekend.
Twice ahead, twice pegged back... in reverse
United controlled the game after the break. Bryan Mbeumo finished clinically just after half-time, and when Tyrique George answered for Everton with a powerful strike in the 84th minute, Benjamin Šeško restored the lead almost immediately with an 88th-minute header, per NBC Sports.
Then came the moment. Six minutes into added time, Maitland-Niles — making his Everton debut — curled home from distance. Sky Sports timed it at 95:11, the latest goal ever conceded at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and noted he is Everton's first debut goalscorer since Richarlison in 2018.
The pattern United can't shake
The draw leaves Everton eighth on five points and United 11th on four. The number that will follow Michael Carrick into the international break is this one, from Sky Sports: United have conceded two or more goals in each of their opening three league games for only the second time in 50 years.
"There was a lot of good things... They got really good goals for different reasons and our second one should've been a winner," Carrick said afterwards. David Moyes, whose side dug the point out late, praised his squad's readiness off the bench — Jack Grealish's introduction helped swing the closing stages Everton's way.
United's frustration was compounded by an incident where Bruno Fernandes was cut in a challenge from James Tarkowski, with play continuing and Harry Maguire booked for his protests, per NBC Sports.
