Leeds 1-1 Manchester United: Calvert-Lewin Cancels Out Mbeumo as Carrick's Wait Goes On

A set-piece equalizer at Elland Road left Manchester United with a third straight 1-1 draw — and their worst seven-game start to a top-flight season since 1986-87.

The scoreline keeps repeating, and so does the story. Manchester United led at Elland Road, faded after the break, and settled for a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday — their third consecutive 1-1 in the league and a result that leaves Michael Carrick's side with one win from seven Premier League games, their fewest at this stage of a top-flight season since 1986-87, according to Sky Sports.

Mbeumo's opener, undone by a corner

Playing without a recognized striker, United pushed Youri Tielemans into a more advanced role, and it worked for a half: Tielemans combined with Bryan Mbeumo, who finished smartly in the 35th minute. But six minutes into the second half, a poorly defended corner was headed down by Tarik Muharemović and Dominic Calvert-Lewin swept home the 51st-minute equalizer.

From there the hosts were the more threatening side. Per NBC Sports, Leeds finished with the better expected-goals figure (1.44 to 0.91), more shots on target (5 to 3) and 21 touches in United's box to the visitors' 12. Bruno Fernandes flashed a late effort just wide, but a United side winless in the league since August never looked like re-taking control.

Two very different moods

Leeds manager Daniel Farke was bullish afterward: "I thought we were the dominant side." His team stayed unbeaten at home, and Calvert-Lewin felt they "were unlucky not to win the game."

On the other side, Harry Maguire offered a blunt self-diagnosis, saying United were "not as brave as we should be" and must rediscover "bravery and composure" to win matches. Carrick, under growing pressure, chose to frame the performance as "a bit of a fresh start." The underlying numbers — and the table — suggest the rebuilding job at Old Trafford remains very much unfinished.
