How Every Sport Qualifies for LA28: The Complete Tracker

The race to Los Angeles has already started — here's how qualification works sport by sport, which berths are already decided, and every date to circle between now and July 2028.

The Los Angeles Olympics are still two summers away, but the competition to get there has already started — and the first berths have already been won. Qualification for LA28 is not one race; it is three dozen of them, each with its own rules, windows and cutoff dates. This tracker lays out how the system works, sport by sport, and what has already been decided as of September 2, 2026. It is a page we will keep updating as federations publish systems and berths are claimed.

The rules of the road

The IOC Executive Board approved the overarching qualification system principles for LA28 in March 2025, and the following month signed off on the largest Olympic program ever: 36 sports, 351 medal events and 11,198 athletes, with women holding 50.5% of quota places — the first majority-female Games. The five sports added by LA28 carry their own quotas on top of the core 10,500: baseball/softball (234 athletes), cricket (180), flag football (120), lacrosse sixes (132) and squash (32).

Most systems share a common architecture: a qualification window running roughly 2026 through spring 2028, at least two routes into the Games (typically a major championship plus a rankings pathway), guaranteed host-nation places for Team USA, and a small number of universality invitations for under-represented countries. The practical consequence: the 2026-27 world championship cycle is not a warm-up. It is the Olympics' first round.

Already decided: the first teams in

Flag football got there first. At the IFAF World Championships in Düsseldorf (August 13-16, 2026), the top two finishers other than the pre-qualified American hosts earned Olympic berths in each tournament. On the men's side, Italy qualified by reaching the final (which the USA won) and Canada took the last spot by beating Mexico 34-26 in overtime for bronze. In the women's event, Canada qualified by making the final — then stunned the USA 27-20 to win gold — and Mexico claimed the other berth by beating Great Britain for bronze. Six of twelve flag football teams are now set; the remaining berths come through further qualification events still to run.

Women's cricket is close behind. Under the system the ICC confirmed in June, each of six berths per gender goes first to continental leaders. Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain sealed the first four women's places as the best-placed side from their continents at this summer's Women's T20 World Cup. The men's continental places are decided by the T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026 — meaning every international this autumn carries Olympic weight — and the hosts take a place in each event provided the USA sits inside the top 15 during the qualification period. The final berth per gender goes to the winner of an eight-team ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

Pools and gyms: the 2027 cascade

Swimming has the biggest single quota at the Games — 830 athletes across 41 events, now including 50m races in backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. World Aquatics' approved system opens the qualification window on March 1, 2027, with a rebuilt "A" standard for individual entry and a "B" standard for additional relay swimmers. The first relay places — 12 automatic qualifying teams — are decided at the 2027 World Championships in Budapest (June 26 – July 18, 2027). Open water keeps its 22-per-gender field, qualifying first in Budapest and then at a final event in spring 2028.

Artistic gymnastics starts even sooner. Under the FIG's published system, the top three teams per gender at this October's World Championships punch the first tickets to LA; the next nine team places per gender are settled at the 2027 Worlds. Qualified teams bring five athletes, with no reserves. Individuals left without a team can still qualify through the 2027 all-around and apparatus rankings, the 2028 World Cup series (February-April) or the 2028 continental championships, with entries closing June 26, 2028.

Roads and multisport: windows already open

Triathlon's window opened on May 18, 2026 and runs two full years, per the criteria approved in February. Its 110 quota places flow mainly through the mixed relay — host places for the USA, automatic spots for the 2026 and 2027 world champions, and a rankings allocation guaranteeing every continent representation — plus an expanded "new flag" pathway reserving ten places for nations that have never qualified.

Athletics keeps its 1,810-athlete quota but reshapes the program: a half marathon replaces the 20km race walk, and a mixed 4x100m relay joins the schedule. World Athletics has not yet published its LA28 entry standards as of this writing; in the meantime, the American trials machinery is already turning — USATF has set 2028 Olympic Marathon Trials standards of 2:16:00 (men, two minutes faster than 2024) and 2:37:00 (women), with the qualifying window open and a half-marathon route from January 2027.

Still to come

Team-sport pathways are the biggest open file. Basketball grows to 384 athletes with expanded 3x3 fields, and soccer flips its format to 16 women's teams and 12 men's — but the detailed continental allocations for those sports, along with several others, have not yet been published in the same detail by their federations. We will add each system to this tracker as it lands.

Dates to circle

This October's gymnastics Worlds hand out LA28's next team berths. December 31, 2026 locks cricket's men's rankings. March 1, 2027 opens the pool. Budapest in mid-2027 settles the relays, and the 2027 world championship cycle across nearly every sport will do most of the sorting. By the time the torch reaches the Coliseum in July 2028, the field will have been two years in the making — and it started in Düsseldorf, in August, with a Canadian overtime win.
