Germany's Jumping Gold in Aachen Punches Seven Team Tickets to LA28
The host nation won the FEI Jumping World Championship team title without dropping a rail, and the first Olympic team quota places of the LA28 cycle were decided with it.
The road to Los Angeles 2028 has its first confirmed travelers. Germany won the FEI Jumping World Championship team title on home soil in Aachen on Friday, and because these championships double as the first team qualifying event of the LA28 cycle, seven nations left with Olympic quota places secured: Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland and France, with the USA already in as hosts, per World of Showjumping.
Untouchable at home
The German quartet — Marcus Ehning (Coolio 42), Sophie Hinners (Iron Dames Singclair), Daniel Deusser (Otello de Guldenboom) and Richard Vogel (United Touch S) — finished on 4.48 penalties, well clear of silver medalists Belgium (11.69) and bronze medalists Great Britain (12.98), per Horse Sport. Remarkably, Germany went through both days of team competition without lowering a single rail, in front of a reported 40,000 spectators.
"I have no words for this team. I am really proud," German chef d'équipe Otto Becker said, per World of Showjumping.
Sunday's individual final is a classic in waiting
The championships close this Sunday with the individual final, and the leaderboard could hardly be tighter: Switzerland's Steve Guerdat (Dynamix de Belheme) and Germany's Deusser are tied at the top on 0.86 penalties, with Britain's Ben Maher (Point Break) just behind on 1.01 and Ehning on 1.78, per World of Showjumping.
Why it matters for LA28
Olympic team qualification usually trickles out over years of championships and regional events. Aachen front-loaded it: with the Aug. 11-23 championships serving as the first LA28 qualifier for team dressage, jumping and eventing, national federations now know — two full years out — whether they are planning for Los Angeles or fighting through the remaining qualification routes.
