The road to LA28 equestrian opened in Aachen this week, and its first defining performance belonged to a 15-year-old black stallion. Charlotte Fry and Glamourdale won the Grand Prix Freestyle at the FEI World Championships on Saturday with a score of 91.907%, in front of a sold-out crowd of 40,000 — their second gold of the week and a statement of intent at the very start of the new Olympic cycle.

A title defended, twice over

The freestyle was the closest final of the week. Denmark's Cathrine Laudrup-Dufour and Mount St. John Freestyle pushed Fry all the way at 91.236%, with Germany's Isabell Werth taking bronze on Wendy de Fontaine at 88.650%, according to Dressage-News. The win sealed a repeat of Fry's world freestyle title from four years ago — and it came a day after she and Glamourdale took the Grand Prix Special at 82.295%, ahead of Laudrup-Dufour (80.927%) and Germany's Katharina Hemmer (80.866%).

"It was the most amazing feeling in the whole world," Fry said after the freestyle. Werth called the final "such high level sport... really so great for the sport."

The LA28 ledger

Aachen matters beyond the medals. The championships, running August 11–23, are the first qualifying event for Los Angeles 2028 in the three Olympic team disciplines — dressage, show jumping and eventing. In the dressage team final, Germany claimed a 13th world team title on home soil, with Fry's Britain taking silver, and six LA28 team quota places were decided, according to Olympics.com.

The dressage book is closed. Show jumping and eventing — with more LA28 places on the line — run through August 23.
