Four Days to Slam the Window Shut on the Premier League's Record Summer
The 2026 transfer window closes Tuesday at 11pm UK time, capping a spree that produced the most expensive British player ever and three nine-figure domestic deals.
Deadline day arrives Tuesday, and for once the drama has largely already happened. The summer window closes at 11pm UK time on September 1, per ESPN's window guide, and English football spent the preceding eleven weeks rewriting its own price list.
The records that fell
The headline deal came in July: Morgan Rogers left Aston Villa for Chelsea in a £117 million transfer that made him the most expensive British player of all time, signing a seven-year contract, according to Sky Sports. The record he broke was weeks old — Elliot Anderson's £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City, confirmed by ESPN. Tottenham joined the nine-figure club too, making Sandro Tonali a club-record £100m signing from Newcastle.
The reshuffle beneath the records
Per Sky Sports' running ins-and-outs list, the midfield market churned hardest: Bruno Guimaraes joined Arsenal from Newcastle for a reported £75m, while Manchester United added Carlos Baleba from Brighton (£70m) and Youri Tielemans from Villa. Defenders moved for big money too — Ezri Konsa to Arsenal (£55m) and Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham (£52m) among them. And two era-defining names left the league on free transfers, per the same list: Mohamed Salah to Trabzonspor and Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid.
What's actually left for Tuesday
With the marquee business done, deadline day becomes a market for loans, squad-fillers and any club panicked by August form. The bigger story is structural: the three largest fees of the summer were all paid by Premier League clubs to other Premier League clubs. The window that closes Tuesday was less about importing stars than about England's top flight trading among itself — at prices nobody else can match.
