Deadline day arrives with the window's defining deal already done: Barcola to Liverpool

The summer transfer window closes across most of Europe's big leagues tonight — 11pm UK time in England, with Serie A shutting at 8pm and La Liga just before midnight — but its headline act is already in the books. Bradley Barcola completed his move from Paris Saint-Germain to Liverpool on Monday for a fee of £123m ($166m) — £106m up front plus up to £17m in add-ons — the costliest deal of the window, according to the Associated Press.

Why it matters

The 23-year-old France winger arrives with back-to-back Champions League titles at PSG, and the fee is a record for any player leaving Ligue 1. Per the AP, Transfermarkt ranks it the 10th-most expensive transfer ever in euros. He slots into a Liverpool attack already built at enormous cost, alongside Alexander Isak (£125m) and Florian Wirtz (£116m), both signed last summer.

"It took a long time, but I'm really happy today to be able to play for Liverpool and all I want is to be on the pitch and be able to play," Barcola said.

A record-spending window

Premier League clubs have collectively spent more than $2.7 billion this summer, according to Al Jazeera, with Chelsea leading the way at roughly $476m, ahead of Tottenham, Manchester City, Newcastle and Arsenal.

What's still live today

Among deals already confirmed on deadline day, Chelsea striker Marc Guiu joined RB Leipzig for £14.6m, per Sky Sports. The unresolved business is bigger: according to Al Jazeera, Liverpool and Manchester City have held talks over Cody Gakpo, Barcelona are expected to land Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal for around $11.6m, and Atletico Madrid are reportedly unwilling to sell Julian Alvarez to Barcelona — though other suitors, Arsenal among them, are said to be circling. None of those moves is confirmed, and the clock runs out tonight.
