Cubs Cut the NL Central Gap to Three as the Brewers Limp West

Chicago's 12-6 win in Washington and Milwaukee's 4-3 loss in San Diego tightened baseball's best division race — and the Brewers now walk straight into Dodger Stadium.

The NL Central is turning into the race of the summer. After Wednesday's action, the Milwaukee Brewers (74-47) lead the Chicago Cubs (71-50) by just three games, with about seven weeks of baseball left to sort it out.

One team is surging

The Cubs piled up a 12-6 win over the Nationals in Washington on Wednesday, and it fits a pattern. According to Sportsnaut, Chicago has posted an .859 OPS and averaged 6.5 runs per game over its last eight, with Pete Crow-Armstrong in a 1.072-OPS stretch and deadline additions Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes and Braxton Garrett reshaping the pitching staff. The Cubs finish the Nationals series Thursday afternoon, then return home to host the Cardinals on Friday.

One team is grinding

Milwaukee dropped a 4-3 decision in San Diego on Wednesday. The Brewers still own an MLB-best +130 run differential and, per FOX Sports, young ace Jacob Misiorowski just became the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 200 strikeouts in a season. But Sportsnaut reports the lineup has managed only a .689 OPS since the deadline while nursing injuries to Brice Turang (thumb) and William Contreras (forearm) — a thin margin for a team that chose a quiet deadline while its rival loaded up.

The schedule bites now

It doesn't get easier: Milwaukee opens a series at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night. Los Angeles has stumbled lately — FOX Sports noted the Dodgers had lost eight of nine through Monday — but they still lead the NL West comfortably, and a wounded contender at home is nobody's idea of a soft landing.

For now, both NL Central teams would make October: Chicago holds the league's top wild-card position by a wide margin. The question is bigger than that — whether the Brewers' 121-game body of work can hold off the hottest lineup in baseball.
