Carles Gil flips the script as the Revolution win 3-1 in Columbus

Down early on the road, New England scored three unanswered — capped by Gil's 79th-minute chip that took him past 150 career MLS goal contributions.

A goal down inside eight minutes, away from home, at the start of a four-game road stretch — that is exactly the spot where mid-table teams lose their season's thread. Instead, the New England Revolution walked out of Columbus with a 3-1 win built on their captain's best night of the year.

How it turned

Brais Méndez put the Crew ahead in the 8th minute off a Mohamed Farsi assist, and for half an hour Columbus looked in control. The reply came from a corner: Matt Polster — making his 200th Revolution appearance — equalized in the 32nd, per the club's match recap. Nine minutes later Dor Turgeman ran onto a weighted Carles Gil pass to make it 2-1 before the break, his second goal in as many games.

Gil then finished the job himself, chipping the goalkeeper in the 79th minute. The goal pushed him past 150 career MLS goal contributions — just the 20th player in league history to get there, according to the Revolution.

The other sideline

Columbus's frustration is that the scoreline flattered nobody: goalkeeper Patrick Schulte matched a career high with eight saves and still conceded three, per the Crew's own match release. The night did carry two footnotes for the home fans — Eric Bailly made his MLS debut and Josef Martínez made his first Crew start — but the Crew now regroup quickly, hosting Colorado on September 5.

Why it matters

New England moved to 11-7-4 (37 points) with a second straight away win, per the club — timely form, because this was game one of four straight on the road. Jack Harrison has now assisted in four consecutive matches and Peyton Miller in three; when the supply lines around Gil are this productive, the Revolution look like a team nobody wants to see in a playoff bracket.
