Buccaneers 16-23 Vikings: Minnesota's defense wins ugly, and Tampa Bay loses Mayfield

Six sacks, an 86-yard punt-return touchdown and a game-sealing interception carried the Vikings to 3-0 — while a dislocated thumb will cost Baker Mayfield at least three weeks.

Some wins are about the quarterback; this one was about everyone else. Minnesota beat Tampa Bay 23-16 on Sunday behind a defense that piled up six sacks and 12 quarterback hits, a special-teams touchdown, and a final-play interception — and the Buccaneers may have lost far more than a game.

Field position, pressure, patience

Myles Price set the tone with an 86-yard punt-return touchdown — Minnesota's first since 2016, per Vikings.com — staking the Vikings to a 10-0 lead. Kyler Murray, in his first season running Kevin O'Connell's offense, had a modest day (15-of-29, 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception) but leaned on Jordan Addison, whose 5 catches for 90 yards included a 41-yard touchdown. Justin Jefferson exited early with an ankle injury. When Tampa Bay threatened late, Isaiah Rodgers ended it with an interception on the final play.

The Bucs' offense never found footing: 2-of-17 on third down, an 85-yard Chris Godwin touchdown wiped out by holding, and three Chase McLaughlin field goals where touchdowns were needed.

The bigger loss

Baker Mayfield (17-of-34, 217 yards, one touchdown, one interception, six sacks taken) dislocated his right thumb on a fourth-quarter fourth-and-1. The MRI showed no ligament or tendon damage, but per NFL.com, head coach Todd Bowles says he is out "a minimum of three weeks," with Week 7 the earliest return. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels — a six-year Kansas quarterback and the school's first four-time captain — makes his first NFL start October 4 against Green Bay, ending Mayfield's run of consecutive starts.

What it means

Minnesota is 3-0 and winning in the least glamorous, most repeatable way: field position, pressure, takeaways. Tampa Bay is 0-3 — its first winless start since 2014 — and now hands the season, at least temporarily, to a rookie nobody drafted.
