Brentford 3-0 Chelsea: One Corner Opens the Floodgates
A scoreless West London derby swung on a 61st-minute set piece, and Keith Andrews' unbeaten Bees climbed to third while Xabi Alonso's Chelsea slid to three league games without a win.
Chelsea arrived at the Gtech Community Stadium wobbling, and Brentford sent them into the international break in full crisis mode. The 3-0 scoreline on Friday night lifted the Bees to third in the Premier League — still unbeaten — while Chelsea dropped to seventh, winless in three league matches after opening the season with two victories.
An hour of stalemate, then the dam broke
For an hour this was a cagey derby. Chelsea held 54% of the ball in a first half that produced almost nothing, per NBC Sports, with expected goals level at 0.39 apiece at the break.
The turning point came in the 61st minute, from the delivery Brentford drill for: Mikkel Damsgaard swung in a corner, 20-year-old Jannik Schuster nodded it back across goal, and Jaidon Anthony headed home from close range. From there Chelsea unraveled. Igor Thiago made it two in the 83rd, pouncing on the rebound after Kevin Schade's breakaway effort was saved, and Fabio Carvalho finished a low cross in stoppage time to complete the rout.
"This is not how to compete in the Premier League," Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso said afterward, per the Associated Press. "We were punished... you need to compete for the whole game."
Two teams heading in opposite directions
Chelsea's absences told. Joao Pedro was out injured, and Moises Caicedo and Reece James remained unavailable — a hollowed-out spine against a Brentford side that has absorbed the summer departures of Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo, Yoane Wissa and David Raya and kept moving. New head coach Keith Andrews has the Bees on 9 points from 5 games, three behind the top of the table, with Caoimhin Kelleher keeping the defensive standards Raya left behind.
"It was a really good evening," Andrews said. "We were in a really good place and it's nice to see it come to fruition tonight."
Both sides now pause for the international break. Chelsea host Bournemouth on October 10, the same day Brentford visit Aston Villa.
