Braves 6, Phillies 2: Harris' First-Inning Blast Ends Philadelphia's Season

Michael Harris II's three-run homer off Aaron Nola decided the winner-take-all Wild Card Game 3 almost before it began, sending Atlanta to an NLDS date with the Dodgers.

Winner-take-all games are supposed to be tense. This one was effectively settled in the first inning, when Michael Harris II turned on an Aaron Nola pitch for a three-run homer that put the Braves ahead of a Phillies team that never recovered. Atlanta won 6-2 and moves on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS; Philadelphia's season — and perhaps an era — is over.

How it unfolded

Philadelphia's pitching plan backfired on both ends. Nola, given the start over Zack Wheeler, lasted just 1 2/3 innings. Wheeler then came out of the bullpen on short rest — his first relief outing since Game 7 of the 2023 NLCS, per MLB.com — and threw four innings, but Ozzie Albies tagged him for a two-run homer in the fourth. Matt Olson added a 416-foot solo shot in the seventh for the final margin.

Atlanta's bullpen-led plan, by contrast, worked almost perfectly. Left-hander Ray Kerr gave the Braves 3 1/3 innings in which, according to Yahoo Sports, the only hitter he couldn't solve was Kyle Schwarber, and Chris Sale closed it out with a four-out save.

What it means

For Atlanta, this is validation: a composed, well-sequenced elimination-game win and a ticket to a heavyweight NLDS against the Dodgers. For Philadelphia, it's a fourth consecutive postseason series defeat for one of baseball's most expensive rosters, and the questions now get uncomfortable. Bryce Harper didn't dodge them: "I'd imagine this team is going to look a lot different next year," he said, per MLB.com, with decisions looming on free agents and trade candidates across an aging core.
