Aston Villa 0-1 Arsenal: Saka settles it as Villa's wait goes on
Bukayo Saka's 59th-minute finish gave Arsenal a second straight win at a ground that haunted them last season — and left Aston Villa pointless after two games.
Villa Park was one of the places Arsenal's title challenge went to die last season, so this 1-0 win carries more weight than the scoreline suggests. Bukayo Saka's second-half goal made it back-to-back victories to open the campaign and reversed last season's result at the same ground.
How it happened
Villa had the best early moment, Emiliano Buendia rattling the crossbar from 20 yards inside the opening quarter-hour. The game tightened from there, and the decisive sequence came just before the hour. Arsenal appealed for a penalty when Saka went down under Ian Maatsen's challenge, but VAR ruled the contact began outside the box. Moments later Arsenal broke through anyway: Riccardo Calafiori drove in a low cross and Saka finished from close range in the 59th minute, with Al Jazeera crediting Eberechi Eze with the pass that released Calafiori.
Kai Havertz had the ball in behind late on but was flagged offside, and Arsenal saw the game out. One note of concern for Mikel Arteta: Al Jazeera reported Declan Rice limped off in the closing stages.
What it means
Arsenal move to six points from six. Arteta called it "a massive win" in "a tough place," per Sky Sports — and given how results here have stung recently, it reads like a box ticked.
For Villa, the raw numbers are grim: zero points from two matches and, per Sky Sports, still no shot on target this season. The debuts offered Unai Emery something, though. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki impressed on his first Premier League appearance, and Emery pointed to Suzuki and fellow debutant Nicolas Jackson as positives. There was also a subplot in the away shirt: Ezri Konsa made his Arsenal debut against his former club. Emery's message afterwards was patience — 36 games remain — but Villa need a spark, fast.
