How the NBA Playoffs Work: Play-In, Seeds & the Finals
From the regular season to the Larry O’Brien Trophy — seeds, the play-in tournament, and best-of-seven series explained.
The NBA’s regular season is a long road, but it exists to set up the postseason. Here’s how a team gets from the standings to the Finals.
Conferences and seeding
The league is split into two conferences, East and West. Within each, teams are ranked by regular-season record. The top finishers earn the best seeds — and seeding matters, because higher seeds face weaker opponents early and get home-court advantage in a series.
The play-in tournament
The six best teams in each conference qualify directly for the playoffs. The teams finishing 7th through 10th enter a short play-in tournament to claim the final two spots. The 7 and 8 seeds play, with the winner grabbing the 7 seed; the 9 and 10 seeds play an elimination game, and that winner then plays the loser of the 7–8 game for the 8 seed. It’s a high-pressure mini-bracket that keeps more teams alive deep into the season.
Best-of-seven rounds
Every playoff round is a best-of-seven series — first team to four wins advances. There are four rounds: the First Round, the Conference Semifinals, the Conference Finals, and then the two conference champions meet in the NBA Finals for the championship. A seven-game series rewards depth, adjustments, and nerve; a team can lose badly one night and completely flip the matchup two nights later.
What to watch for
Playoff basketball is a different game from the regular season: rotations shorten, defenses tighten, and stars carry heavier loads. Watch how coaches counter-adjust between games — the chess match across a series is often where it’s won.
